FAQ
Do I still need an accountant?
Bookie is designed to work alongside your accountant, not replace them. While we automate your day-to-day bookkeeping and provide tax recommendations, we're not a public accounting firm. We always recommend consulting with a professional accountant for tax filings, complex situations, and business advice.
How does Bookie handle my financial data?
Your financial data is encrypted and securely stored. We use bank-level security protocols to ensure your information is always protected.
Will you sell my data?
Absolutely not. We will never sell your data to third parties. We are deliberate about every service we use, like our EU-based hosting and secure payment processing. Any transaction data processed by AI is fully anonymised before it leaves our core system.
What jurisdictions does Bookie support?
Bookie works for freelancers worldwide, with specialized support for Malta's tax system. For Malta, Bookie supports VAT calculations, VAT code recommendations, income-tax report figures, and local compliance workflows. We're actively expanding support for additional tax jurisdictions.
Can self-employed people in Malta use Bookie?
Yes. Bookie is built for freelancers, sole traders, self-employed people, and small businesses, including users based in Malta. You can track income, expenses, receipts, invoices, VAT, and accountant-ready reports in one place.
Does Bookie prepare VAT and income tax returns?
Bookie prepares the figures and reports you need for VAT and income tax review. For Malta, Bookie helps calculate VAT and income-tax report figures from your recorded income, expenses, tax codes, and accounting events. We recommend having your accountant review and file your returns where required.
Can my accountant use Bookie with me?
Yes. Bookie is designed to work with your accountant. You can keep your books organised throughout the year, then share accountant-ready records, reports, VAT figures, income-tax figures, and transaction history when it's time to review or file.
Can I import my existing financial data?
Yes! You can import your historical data using our CSV bulk uploader. Simply format your data according to our template, which works with most accounting software exports, and you'll have your transaction history in Bookie in minutes.
How long does it take to get set up?
Most freelancers are up and running in under 15 minutes. Create your account, set your preferences, and you're ready to start tracking your income and expenses.
What if I'm not happy with the product?
We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. If you're not happy within the first two weeks, we'll refund you in full. If it's been longer, reach out anyway. We want you to be happy and enjoy using our software.
Is Bookie just an AI wrapper?
No. The core of Bookie is built on deterministic code that ensures your financial calculations are always accurate and reliable. We use AI strategically for specific tasks like receipt processing and transaction categorization, with human review options and fallbacks in place.
Is Bookie just a vibe-coded AI app?
No. Bookie has been in development for over two and a half years, with a full accounting engine, tax workflows, invoicing, expenses, receipt processing, multi-currency support, and accountant-ready reporting built into the product. It is led by Jonathan Copperstone, whose background includes Salesforce, fintech product development, insurance SaaS, and self-employed consulting through Toptal.
You're missing some features I need. What gives?
